A native of Asheville, North Carolina, he studied at the University of North Carolina, acted with the Carolina Playmakers, and received his Masters at Harvard University.

Books:

  • Look Homeward, Angel: A Story of the Buried Life (1929)
  • Of Time and the River (1935)
  • The Web and the Rock (1939)
  • You Can't Go Home Again (1940)
