A tenant (from the Latin tenere (to hold)), in legal contexts, holds real property by some form of title from a landlord.

Various forms of tenancy exist, or have existed in the past. These include:

  • socage
  • tenancy for life
  • tenancy for years
  • tenancy from year to year
