Meuse River

The Meuse (Dutch Maas) islarge European river risingFrance,flowing through Belgium andNetherlands, draining inNorth Sea. Its length900 km (560 miles).

The river rises inLangres Plateau, Franceflowing north past Sedan (the headnavigation)Charleville-Mézières into Belgium. Itjoined bySambre river at Namur. From NamurMeuse winds eastward skirtingArdennes, passes Liège ,turns north. Thenforms part ofBelgian-Dutch border, except that at Maastrichtbordermore westward. InsideNetherlandscontinues north along Venlo, then turns westward.

InNetherlandsmerges withRhine into an extensive delta, eventually flowing intoNorth Sea viaNieuwe Waterweg andHollands Diep.

It splits near Heusden intoAfgedamde Maas onright andBergse Maas onleft.
