History

The district dates back toAmt Meißen, which was first mentioned1334. The Wettins asruling dynasty margraviate Meißen createdadministrative division Amt in13th century. In 1835Amt was converted intoAmtshauptmannschaften, witharea ofdistricttoday covered byAmtshauptmannschaft Meißen, DresdenGroßenhain. In 1939were renamedLandkreise (district). Inadministrative reform1952 several municipalities changed intonew district FreibergDöbeln. In 1990old district borders were restored,in 1996 parts ofdistricts Dresden Land were added todistrictgiveits current size.

Geography

The main river ofdistrict isElbe, which also flows throughcityMeißen.
