A mechanical deskusually an antique desk type which was produced during18th or19th century. At one extreme we can find such desks furnished withmultitudepanels that swing out while stackssmall drawers pop up whenuser lowers or extractsmain writing surface or desktop fromclosed position, thankssome well placed levers and/or gears. Atother extreme we findmechanicaly simple desk likeWooton desk whose two panels open up separately by handwhose desktopalso opened inseparate manual operation, without exploiting any gears or levers. The mechanical desk fad gradually passed away atbeginning of19th century. Bymiddle of19th century desk mecanisms were mostly simple affairs meantextract or retract sliders or supports fromsecretary desk,give but one example.
The windows that can pop up all overvirtual desk ingraphical user interface or GUIinsense direct descendants ofmore complicated of18th century mechanical desks. Onwhole however, these virtual windows seembe more efficientgetting useful work done.
