Kurt Diemberger (born 1932Austria), isonly remaining person alive that has madefirst ascents on two mountains over 8,000 metres. In 1957, he madefirst ascentBroad Peakin 1960,first ascentDhaulagiri. Diemberger was alsolast personsee Hermann Buhl alive before he fell throughcornice on Chogolisa.In 1986, DiembergerJulie Tullis reachedsummitK2. Shortly after starting their descent, Julie fell -- dragging Diembergerher. Fortunately,somehow stopped from going overedgespentnight above 8,000 metres. They managedreach Camp IVnext day wherewere forcedsharetentother climbers after their tent had collapsed from hurricane force winds. Unfortunately, Julie died later that night, possibly from HACE.
