History

The county was formed1771 from partsRowan CountyOrange County. It was namedFrancis North, 1st EarlGuilford, fatherFrederick North, Lord North, Prime MinisterGreat Britain from 17701782.

In 1779southern thirdGuilford County became Randolph County. In 1785northern halfits remaining territory became Rockingham County.

Geography
