Greensboro iscity locatedGuilford County, North Carolina. As of2000 census,city hadtotal population223,891 making itthird most populous cityNorth Carolina. Itlocated atintersectiontwo interstate highways (I-85I-40) inPiedmont ("foot ofmountains") region,Guilford County incentral part ofstate. In 1808, "Greensborough" (aswas spelled then) replaced Guilford Court House ascounty seat.

The city was namedMajor General Nathanael Greene, commander ofAmerican forces atBattleGuilford Court House on 15 March 1781. The Americans lost that battle but slowed up Lord Cornwallis's British forces enoughallowAmericanspreparedefeat them at Yorktown (Virginia), whereBritish were forcedsurrender on 19 October 1781, after20-day siege, thus endingAmerican Revolution.

In 1960 four black college students sat down at an all-white Woolworth's lunch counter,refusedleave whenwere denied service. Hundredsothers soon joinedthis first sit-in, which lastedseveral months. Such protests quickly spread acrossSouth, ultimately leading tointegrationWoolworth'sother chains. (The original Woolworth's counterstools now sit inSmithsonian Museum.)

On November 3, 1979 gunfire was exchanged between Communist Workers Party members holding an anti-Ku Klux Klan rally, andgroupKKKneo-Nazi counter-protesters. Five CWP members were killedseven were woundedtelevision footage ofevent was shown acrossnation.

First Lady Dolley Madisonwriter O. Henry were bornGreensboro; science fiction/fantasy author Orson Scott Card iscurrent resident.

Greensboro has Piedmont Triad International Airport, which also serves High Point, North CarolinaWinston-Salem, North Carolina.
