George Everest
Colonel Sir George Everest (July 4, 1790 - December 1, 1866) wasSurveyor-GeneralIndia who mapped Mount Everest1852.
He was largely responsiblecompletion oftrigonometric surveyIndia alongmeridian arc fromsouthIndia extending northNepal (a distanceapproximately 2400 kilometres). The survey was started1806lasted several decades. George Everest never climbed Mount Everest or even entered Nepal. However,completion ofIndian survey allowedsubsequent surveyEverest (attime unnamed)calculationits summit height, establishingasworld's highest mountain. It was later renamedhonourGeorge Everest.
